Heaven Shall Burn – Invictus
Just like Clint Eastwood’s most recent movie with the same title, the third installment in Heaven Shall Burn’s Iconoclast series deals with social injustice and politics in a way that digs a little deeper than most metalcore bands who tell you to fuck shit up. “Buried In Forgotten Grounds” is about Pinochet and the role of the CIA in South-American politics while “Against Bridge Burners” is about the Russian dissident Lev Kopolev. But whereas Eastwood’s movie gently trickles along, Heaven Shall Burn is about as subtle as a sledgehammer to your face.
Ever since 2004’s “Antigone” these Germans have been treating us to some extremely brutal yet melodic metalcore that thrives thanks to the awesome dual guitar riffage and Marcus Bischoff’s sick vocal work. While all the characteristics are still here, Heaven Shall Burn isn’t afraid to experiment a little. Icelandic composer Olafur Arnalds contributes three moody orchestral parts that help set the mood while the band switches seamlessly between their particular brand of death/metalcore and the kind of ballad that is “Given In Death”, a duet between Bischoff and Deadlock’s Sabine Weniger. It’s not the best song on here… not even by a long shot but kudos to the guys for stepping out of their comfort zone. I still prefer them while blasting away though and that’s exactly what these guys do on most of “Invictus”.
Score: 8 out of 10
