Dark Fortress – Eidolon

I’ve always heard that eating a lot of carrots works wonders for your complexion while hot milk with a little honey in it soothes every scratchy throat. The dudes that make up German black metal act Dark Fortress obviously never heard that. They were too busy writing an album called “Eidolon” which is about the initiation, dehumanization and unearthly rebirth of a transcending soul by mirror magic and astral projection. Wait, it gets even better. An “Eidolon” is a Greek concept of an astral double of a living being or a “mirror”. The concept describes a magic mirror ritual as while a person is in a trance, the surface of the mirror is used as a gate to enter a new dimension.

Musically speaking, these guys are far from entering any new dimensions. Instead they settled for sounding like a third-rate Dimmu Borgir who don’t reach the level of say, “Enthrone Darkness Triumphant” anywhere on “Eidolon”. After what seemed like an hour, I was already three songs into the album and everything just blurred together by then. I tried to get my astral double to finish the job but hell, even he couldn’t be bothered with it.
Score: 5 out of 10
