Frightened Rabbit – The Winter Of Mixed Drinks

Scotland’s indie darlings are back with a new album. One that is surprisingly more optimistic than the breakup album that was “The Midnight Organ Fight”. “The Winter Of Mixed Drinks” starts off straight away with “Things”, a song that talks of leaving everything behind and starting all over.

Next up is single “Swim Until You Can’t See Land”, perhaps the song in which they sound their most anthemic so far. It proves this album is no “The Midnight Organ Fight pt. 2”. Instead these guys have opted for a slightly bigger, more open and catchy sound. Not overly catchy aimed unabashedly for the hit parades. No, they stay true to what they started with their previous albums and build on it. It turns out they made an album that may need a few spins but once these songs get their hooks in you, there’s no going back.

I’m fairly sure this album will help Frightened Rabbit get to the next level. After all it’s the same kind of musical shapeshifting that launched Death Cab into the big leagues. Let’s call this one their “Transatlanticism”.
Score: 7.5 out of 10
