Art Brut – Art Brut vs. Satan

With “Art Brut vs. Satan”, this South London five-piece already has album number three under their belt. And if you’re wondering – like I was - why you had never heard of these guys before, it’s quite simply because they are not that good.

Vocalist Eddie Argos tries really hard to come across as witty but doesn’t come further than one or two puns worth remembering. Humor and rock music just don’t work. Jokes get old real quick. Hasn’t this been proven enough already? Plus the guy talks rather than sings, save for the occasional halfhearted attempt at a catchy chorus. This can never be a good thing when you’re making music.

Oh yeah, music… nervous jangly indierock like a zillion other bands out there. Art Brut does get to boast a production job by Black Francis. But as we all know, having good ol’ Black Francis aboard doesn’t automatically lead to Pixies greatness. Satan won this one hands down.
Score: 4 out of 10
