Indiepop from South Africa? Don’t know too many acts… no, scratch that. I didn’t know a single indiepop act from South Africa until I heard Dear Reader. But now I’m ready for more if Dear Reader is anything to go by.
Vocalist Cheri Macneil has a very cute voice and sounds like Emiliana Torrini. She likes to sing about fucked up relationships while being backed up by drums and piano. That’s pretty much Dear Reader’s foundation… from there anything goes. Great backup vocals, organs, string arrangements, a choir,… It’s all there somewhere on “Replace Why With Funny”.
I have no idea what’s up with the album title but I do know that with a debut like “Replace Why With Funny”, this is one band that you’ll have to keep an eye out for!
