Ok Go – Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky

Everybody’s favorite nerds are back with a new album based on General A.J. Pleasanton’s “The Influence Of The Blue Ray Of The Sunlight And Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky”, an obscure title out of 1876. No idea what it’s all about but it makes for some fine artwork. All fine and dandy but did these guys manage to record an equally fine album with the help of Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann?

Opener “WTF?” immediately sets the bar very high with falsetto vocals and crispy guitar sounds. Yup, this one has Prince written all over. And that’s not the only time this His Purpleness nods along approvingly. The same thing goes for a song like “White Knuckles”. “This Too Shall Pass” on the other hand sounds like that other band that Fridmann produced, MGMT. And “Before The Earth Was Round” is a song that Air just didn’t get round to writing yet. Overall this album sees OK GO come out with a way more open sound full of 80s sounding synths.

These guys are still quirky but with the help of Fridmann they’ve come up with a more mature and diverse sound with plenty of room for experimentation and even more amazing songs. With “Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky” OK GO prove that they’re a hell of a lot more than sharp dressers with a treadmill routine.
Score: 8 out of 10
