Scary Mansion aka Leah Hayes is back with a new album. It’s already been out in the States for a while and is now finally being released in Europe thanks to Talitres. Hayes plays indie folk/rock that is about as dark as as the lyrics and on top of that has the same kind of voice as Cat Power. So comparison are not too far-fetched.
Not that sounding like Cat Power is necessarily a bad thing. You could also sound like Nickelback which would be way worse. Or a female version of 50 Cent… oh, the horror of it. Anyway, Hayes does a decent enough job on “Make Me Cry” but she’s not exactly treading any new ground. And when you do sound like someone else, you’d better make damn sure you sound like a very good copy. Unfortunately things sound a little too whiny for my taste.
