New Pokerface – Another Day, Another Religion

New Pokerface is a Dutch punkrock band who are going to make some serious waves with “Another Day, Another Religion” if there’s any justice left in the world. Apparently they already released an EP back in 2006 called “Act The Animal” that got some good reviews but this is the first time I’ve heard them and I’m seriously liking this batch of songs.

Skatepunk a la Satanic Surfers (“Quit Old Habits”), punkrock not unlike The Bouncing Souls (“There’s No Them”) or melodic hardcore (“Ignites My Fuse”)… it’s all on here and it’s all done very well. And where it took Millencolin years to evolve from skatepunk to a more straighforward rock sound, these dudes simply do it on their first album with tracks like “Heaven Said”. With a bigass sound, plenty of melody and aggression, great vocals by both Tim Klaassen and Erik Hermeler and goodlooking artwork, there’s really nothing but positive things to say about this album. Well, maybe not everything is equally original. The intro to “Break Walls” for instance sounds very Boysetfire-ish.

Other than that, it’s all good though making “Another Day, Another Religion” is an impressive debut full-length made by a young and hungry band who are still keeping the DIY spirit alive by releasing the whole thing on their own.
