Eleanor Friedberger – Last Summer

- by Thomas

After a whole slew of albums with her brother Matthew, Fiery Furnaces’ Eleanor Friedberger felt the time was right for a solo effort and so she went ahead and did her own thing. What that sounds like? Like most solo albums, “Last Summer” comes with a different feel than her normal work. Which is probably a relief for some seeing as Fiery Furnaces is umm, well… something of an acquired taste.

Free from the overstuffed arrangements her brother Matthew likes to inject FF’s material with, Friedberger’s voice shines more than before with her typical half spoken, half sung vocals over poppy songs. Still quirky but nothing too far out there, “Last Summer” is a breezy album that floats by like a couple of smaller clouds in an otherwise blue sky. Highlights are the sax-enhanced opener “My Mistakes” and “Heaven”. Nothing too fancy or outstanding, just a fun album.
Score: 6 out of 10
