The Blakes – S/T

The Blakes’ self-titled debut opens with a mean left to the chin… a dirty riff throws you off just long enough for vocalist Garnet Keim to land the punch. “Don’t Bother Me” sounds a bit more restrained… kinda like the first song after a couple of anger management classes. Next up is “Magoo” which sounds like the Stones before they got old.
I can keep on going describing song after song but fact is that The Blakes wrote a solid rock album on which they most certainly do sound like all the other ‘The’ bands. Yes, they do wear their influences on their sleeve (of a tattered and torn leather jacket no doubt), but they are energetic like The Stooges and have enough memorable melodies to make it an album worth hearing if you’re into the kind of bands that like to combine garage rock on ‘roids with the janglier sounds of Britpop..
Score: 7.5 out of 10
