Soulfly – Conquer

I’ve barely recovered from the Cavalera Conspiracy album and out comes Soulfly with a new album, their sixth already. Max sure knows how to keep himself busy!
There’s no more nu metal like on Soulfly’s first albums. This is straight-up thrash, just like on predecessor “Dark Ages”. Opener “Blood Fire War Hate” is easily the most furious opener of any Soulfly album to date. Another good one is “Unleash” which comes with guest vocals from Throwdown’s Dave Peters.
Ethnic sounds have always been a big part of Soulfly’s sound. They are once again present on “Conquer” but seem to have taken the backseat. There’s less tribal influences on here in between all the brutality, making it all the more effective once a mellow part kicks in. And of course this album closes off with another self-titled track. Not my favorite but hey, what’s a Soulfly album without one?
Score: 7.5 out of 10
