What to expect when former members of skapunk/hardcore outfit Suicide Machines start a new band? More of the same or something else? On “Carry On”, Hifi Handgrenades’ debut, it’s something else… expect a lot of Cheap Tricked powerpop mixed in with some hardcore punk.
The ten songs snap away nicely and after a mere 30 minutes it’s all over. Not once did it annoy me but I couldn’t exactly remember a whole lot about the album afterwards either. Several more listens didn’t reveal anything I hadn’t already heard the first time, making this one of those albums that’s ‘just’ an enjoyable way to pass the time. Tracks like “Carry On” or “Heart Of Steel” start off nice enough but never deliver that hook or riff you’re so desperately waiting for. I think these guys can do a whole lot better but for now the Superchunk cover of “Detroit Has A Skyline” is the best song on here!
Score: 6 out of 10
