Behemoth – Evangelion
For twenty years already Behemoth has been walking the line between death and black metal. “Evangelion” is the name of the new disc and things sound decidedly more black metal compared to their last two releases. So much so that it’s better to compare “Evangelion” to “Zos Kia Cultus” rather than “Demigod” or “The Apostasy”.
It’s a good thing if you ask me and this album is simply amazing. It’s everything that you’d expect from Behemoth and more. The demonic drumming, the Oriental influences and the killer riffs are still there but they’ve added more layers and played more with the dynamics and overall atmosphere. It definitely makes for a more entertaining album. And as if the first eight tracks aren’t impressive enough yet, check out “Lucifer”. It’s an 8-minute long experimental track based on a poem by Tadeusz Micinski. It’s quite simply epic and stunning.
If you only know the last two albums by this band, “Evangelion” might take some getting used to. But you’ll quickly have to agree that this is one of this year’s best when it comes to extreme metal.
Score: 8.5 out of 10
