The Deer Tracks – Aurora
Deer tracks make me think of Bambi. And guess what? The band Deer Tracks plays some very sugary pop music that is cuddly as that little fucker that sprouted from Walt Disney’s brain. This Swedish outfit consists of David Lehnberg and Elin Lindfors who on “Aurora” touch upon everything from Sigur Rós to Múm and probably a couple of other bands with accents in their names as well. Oh, and Björk. That’s not really an accent but it’s close enough.
Their tunes are too sweet to be called shoegazer and too dreamy to be pure pop. But somewhere in between is fine by me and as I let opener “Yes This Is My Broken Shield” wash over me, I can’t help but be swept away. They like to heap layers of sound upon each other, mostly starting off with just hazy vocals and some electronic bleeps. Then in come a variety of sounds including distorted guitars, trumpets and heaps of reverb. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t quite compute.
This is not for everyone. I think a lot of people will either get bored with it or fall asleep after a couple of songs (their shows should be quite a sight!) but if you fully immerse yourself in The Deer Tracks’ sound, you might find that it’s actually worth your while.
Score: 7 out of 10
