Todd Snider – The Excitement Plan

Todd Snider is already back with the follow-up to last year’s “Peace Queer” and he has brought his self-deprecating sense of humor with him. Whether he’s singing some lowlife who got murdered and about how the police simply had too many leads to follow up on or about the indignity of himself getting arrested in his forties or about a piece of junk mail dreaming about being a tree again, he’s always amazing in delivering his lyrics over ramshackle blues or while hammering away at the piano.

The result are charming songs that reminded me of Randy Newman more than once. Snider seems like the kind of guy who always ends up on the wrong side of a good deal. Except in his songs where he always comes out the winner.
Score: 8 out of 10
