The Black Keys – Attack & Release
Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney aka The Black Keys mostly just record their albums themselves in a lo-fi kinda way. Hell, they recorded most of “Thickfreakness” in half a day! So it’s a bit strange to see these guys teaming up with a hip producer such as Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz). But I have to say that “Attack & Release”, the duo’s latest album is another amazing addition to the everexpanding Black Keys catalog.
ith guitarist Marc Ribot and Patrick’s uncle Ralph Carney – both of whom played with Tom Waits - helping out, they’ve created a fuller sound that some will probably regret but I’m loving every second of it! Whether it’s a blues stomper such as “I Got Mine” or the more haunting downtempo “Psychotic Girl”, The Black Keys pull it off every single time up until the last notes of the country ballad “Things Ain’t Like They Used To Be” have rung out. Excellent job!
Score: 9 out of 10
