After two full-lengths on 4AD, Cass McCombs has found a new willing home to release his material. McCombs is a singer/songwriter but not the traditional kind that comes to mind when you mention a singer/songwriter with an acoustic guitar and a batch of songs about girls he once knew. Well, he does that too on songs like "Pregnant Pause". But opener "Lionkiller" in which he keeps building up tension with a rhythm that could very well be an ADD patient's rhythm to life, is something else.
McCombs' earlier albums were a lot more eccentric than "Dropping The Writ" though. Dare we say the man is settling down on one sound? Not that that is a bad thing because I'd love to hear more songs that sound like the Elliott Smith-like "Full Moon Or Infinity". So let's just say that "Dropping The Writ" is definitely a step forward for Cass McCombs but he isn't quite there yet.
Score: 7 out of 10
