Byzantine – Oblivion Beckons
The beeping in the intro of opener “Absolute Horizon” may sound similar to the bleeps Thrice opened “Vheissu” with, but that’s about as far as that comparison will go. Byzantine has always been somewhere on the outskirts of extreme metal yet with “Oblivio Beckons” they’ve got a good chance of graduating to the big leagues where they will be welcomed by the likes of Lamb Of God, Mastodon and Between The Buried And Me.
Nicely layered, atmospheric parts with a great flair melody are traded in for rifftastic monsters where vocalist OJ has to grunt, growl or sing his way through in one second flat. If you’re adventurous enough, you might want to explore Byzantine’s world. It’s a trip!
Score: 8.5 out of 10
