Crystal Stilts – Alight Of Night
I’m kinda late with reviewing Crystal Stilts’ album… don’t know if they’re still the buzz band of the moment. But a while back when this album came out in late 2008, there was a lot of hype surrounding these Brooklynites. And deservedly so because on “Alight Of Night” they prove what you can do with a record collection consisting entirely of Velvet Underground and Joy Division releases along with a mind determined to create something new out of the old.
With a sturdy rhythm section in place and a guitarist drowning in reverb, vocalist Brad Hargett has plenty of room to strut his bored and aloof vocals. The songs on here would’ve been depressing as fuck if it weren’t for the melodies that are an integral part of the Crystal Stilts sound. They’re always around as are nice flourishing touches that further help make the songs seem like they’re not written by a mellow zombie. Check out that organ line in “Crystal Stilts”! Or go straight to “The City In The Sea”, the song The Velvet Underground never wrote.
For once it seems that all the hype actually makes sense because here’s a band that has no problem living up to it.
Score: 8 out of 10
