Deathstars – Night Electric Night

‘With a new millennium comes a new sound’ is what a couple of dudes in Stockholm must’ve thought when they started Deathstars. They had previously been active in outfits such as Dissection, Swordmaster and Ophthalamia (there’s a catchy name!) and traded in their black/death metal roots of yesteryear for a Marilyn Manson-like image and a deathglam meets industrial sound which is also gothic as fuck. Fast-forward a couple of years and I’m stuck listening to the band’s third album, “Night Electric Night”.

At first I wanted to write these guys off as a Rammstein by way of Marilyn Manson clone but the more I listen to this album, the more I realize it’s not just that. First of all, the songs are incredibly catchy. The riffs may be monosyllabic and straight-forward without any room for notefucking but keyboards really help give things shape here. Whereas with most bands keyboards don’t really serve a purpose except as a cute extra, here they really help make this band’s sound.

Then there’s the vocalist who goes by the name of Whiplasher Bernadotte and who sounds kinda like the dude from Rammstein singing about all the things that make life worth living… sex, drugs and rock n roll. Then proceed by throwing in some catchy backing vocals et voila… all done! Most of all they reminded me of a more industrial version of later Moonspell and as bad as that may sound, this is actually pretty damn good!
Score: 8 out of 10
