True Widow – S/T

Out of Dallas, Texas comes True Widow with a self-titled full-length. This new project by Slowride’s Dan Phillips might not be instantly memorable but just as he proved with his previous band, Phillips actually is an ace at writing catchy songs. In Slowride they hid this fact behind layers of noise, here they do it with subdued rhythms and guitars that sound as if they took a couple of Quaaludes first. As they slowly buzz, Phillip’s voice is beautifully complimented by bassist Nicole Estill, who also takes the lead in one of the album’s highlights “Duelist”.

Like I said before, you might not be instantly smitten with this one but give it a few listens and the quiet/loud dynamics will slowly win you over along with Phillips’ distant vocals and the band’s firm grasp on melodic songwriting.
Score: 7.5 out of 10
