The Low Anthem – Oh My God, Charlie Darwin

After launching Fleet Foxes, Bella Union has already found the next act they are going to help become a household name. The Low Anthem is a trio from Providence, RI and they aren’t doing a hell of a lot wrong on “Oh My God, Charlie Darwin”.

The album opens quietly with “Charlie Darwin” and “To Ohio”, two songs that made me think of Band Of Horses, Simon & Garfunkel and a couple of other fine artists. Then in comes the blues stomp of “The Horizon Is A Beltway” and you’re left wondering if those growls can possibly come from the same dude who is singing the falsetto voice in “Charlie Darwin”. It’s all good though.

The rest of the album is equally unpredictable with songs that have as much in common with Bob Dylan as they do with Josh Ritter (“(Don’t )Tremble”) and Fleet Foxes (“Cage The Songbird”). I could’ve done without the instrumental boredom that is “Music Box” but other than that The Low Anthem are doing everything right until the reprise of “To Ohio” sees us out in the gentlest of ways.
Score: 8.5 out of 10
