Regina Spektor – Far
The Jewish-Russian-New York girl known as Regina Spektor is back with the follow-up to “Begin To Hope”. Still sounding as naïve and fragile as three years ago, she still reminds me of a way cuter version of Tori Amos. This time around she does come with a slicker sound thanks to producers such as Jeff Lynne and Jacknife Lee but that’s okay, I still like her.
The new album is called “Far” and contains a whopping fifteen songs (thirteen plus two bonus songs) that are diverse enough to keep me interested. There’s the very whistle-along-able “Blue Lips” which is followed by “Folding Chair”, a song that could’ve been written by Kimya Dawson if she actually learned how to play an instrument. Up next is “Machine” where Spektor does something cool with David Byrne’s music installation “Playing the building” and then there’s “Laughing With” which reminded me of Joan Osborne’s “One Of Us”.
Spektor’s songs are part happy go lucky and part very sad such as “Genius Next Door” and always easy on the ear. And goddamn, what a voice!
Score: 8 out of 10
