Basia Bulat – Heart Of My Own

Out of Canada comes Basia Bulat who might not have the catchiest name ever, but she definitely knows how to write some heartwrenchingly beautiful songs. Whether it’s just her voice and a lost ukulele or harp backing her up (“Sparrow”, “The Shore”) or a very full-sounding song like “Go On” and “Run”, this girl is here to impress.

It all sounds very folky but not in a merry go round kinda way. Bulat would rather sound as depressed as The Velvet Underground and we only love her more because of it. Another name that might pop up in the back of your head while listening to the wide variety of instruments being used on “Heart Of My Own” is Arcade Fire. Well, that might have something to do with her producer… former Arcade Fire member Howard Bilerman. But hey, remember that even though the arrangements might be rich and variety is aplenty, the main attractions are the songs and Basia Bulat’s voice. And both of them are amazing.
