Miss Derringer – Winter Hill

Miss Derringer is a band around Elizabeth “Bloodbath” McGrath and her husband Morgan Slade who specialize in outlaw country and early 60s girl pop with a goth twist. Imagine The Shirelles singing about drugs, alcohol and murder. Sounds intriguing doesn’t it? Well, lemme tell you that Miss Derringer doesn’t disappoint on “Winter Hill”. It’s not groundbreaking but it’s fun.

Opener “Click Click Bang Bang” sets the mood with McGrath’s soothing voice while a surf guitar lightens things up even more, before you notice that the lyrics are anything but happy. It’s a formula they stick to for the rest of the album and it proves to be pretty damn effective. It’s a little less impressive in a slower song like “Death By Desire”. But overall these guys have something good going on that’s worth checking out.
