BZB is a Dutch band that has been around for almost twenty years. Originally known as Band Zonder Banaan (Band Without Banana… yes, it was more about the fun than the music then), they started playing more and more shows over the years and became more serious about their music without ever losing their youthful exuberance.
They call their style Nederfolkrock and that pretty much covers the load. Think Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murhphys and The Pogues with Dutch lyrics. On their seventh album, they sing about the deadly seven sins set to a party vibe.
Opener “7 Dagen, 7 Zonden” could’ve been lifted off of a Flogging Molly album and “Mijn Dorp” is Dropkick Murphys at its most mellow. If they’d kept it like that, this would’ve already been a fine album. Thing is, these guys don’t shy away from the occasional experiment. “Testosteron” for example comes with a klezmer vibe while rapper Def P spits some rhymes in “Sta Op” and gets away with it. It’s that playfulness that helps lift things to the next level and makes “7” the perfect party album.
