I Hate Kate – Embrace The Curse

I Hate Kate started out when former Zebrahead vocalist/guitarist Justin Mauriello started writing songs as a creative outlet. Soon after the idea of a new band started taking shape and as a working title they picked I Hate Kate, named after a friend’s girlfriend who apparently wasn’t very likeable. After a while the name stuck and so what started as an inside joke, remained. Picture how proud Kate must be now!

Musically, “Embrace The Curse” is filled with the kind of powerpop meets poppunk that is begging to be played on the radio, not in the least thanks to the glossy production job courtesy of veteran producer Mark Trombino. It’s nothing too special or groundbreaking but if you’re looking for a fun listen, I’m thinking I Hate Kate isn’t the worst thing you can come across with catchy songs like opener “Bed Of Black Roses” or the Peter Schilling cover of “Major Tom”.
Score: 6.5 out of 10
