Kidneys – S/T
Brooks Wackerman is best known as the drumming force behind Bad Religion but the guy is involved in a couple of other projects as well. Let’s call it an even zillion and leave it like that. One of them is called Kidneys and with Brooks handling all the writing, producing, vocals and most of the instruments, I think it would definitely qualify as a solo project.
On his self-titled debut you’ll find ten powerpop songs that lie somewhere between Elvis Costello (mostly the vocal delivery) and the Descendents with a couple of tips of the hat to The Posies and hell, even the Smashing Pumpkins (“The Engine”) along the way. Not too shabby at all and with the mildly lo-fi production, it has just enough grit to sink your teeth in.
Score: 7 out of 10
