I have to admit that this time around Avenged Sevenfold is off to a good start on album number five. “Nightmare” sounds like something I would imagine Alice Cooper to sound like if he started out now. Hard rocking, big chorus and just the right amount of theatrics to pull off the drama.
Unfortunately we’re immediately disappointed by the following songs where Avenged Sevenfold sounds desperately like a band trying to please every single Hot Topic customer out there. It’s a little bit of everything except for the good stuff. And at the same time it’s too much of everything else… which would be the bad stuff. An over the top flair for bombast and drama (that ‘grand finale’ in “Danger Line”… seriously?), pointless solos, songs that are way too long for their own good,… the list goes on and on.
I still wonder from time to time where that band went that made the album “Sounding The Seventh Trumpet”. One thing is sure, you won’t find them on “Nightmare”.
